People ask me often, that who are all Eligible to take Yozen Counseling and in which condition that Yozen Therapy can be sought for.

My Answer to Yozen Clients and all of You is :

1. Counseling can be given for “All normal people” from different age groups and different educational/career background.

2. Those who seek for Psychological counseling are NOT considered as a ‘seriously affected psychotic patient’.

3. The Man who dare to face the issues, naturally seek help from an expert to come out of it, rest would end in disaster.

4. The Man who ‘himself want to’ get rid of some negative habits can be helped out to attain his goals here.

5. If the affected one is unwilling to cooperate, adamant in his/her logic, arrogance with others can NEVER be helped.

6. Those who are weeping and sobbing to come out of some “unknown stress” in their subconscious mind can go for Yozen Therapy. They can utilise Yozen Therapy for the unreasonable fears and phobias also for total cure.

7. Simply to say, whatever emanates from one’s conscious mind and who needs some advice and guidance in Life, he/she can seek for a good, wise and experienced counselor.

8. An important clue is, if you are more knowledgeable you will have more logical and complicated issues in your life. If it is the case, you cannot be satisfied with some mediocre counselors and their ready-made suggestions and advice.

இரு சாராருக்கு இடையில் ஒரு பிரச்சினை எழும் போது தீர்வு காண்பது யார்? எது நியாயம் என்று எப்படி வரையறை செய்வது? அதையிங்கு ஆராய்வோம்!

1 . இந்தியா பாகிஸ்தான் (Kashmir conflict) எல்லைப் பிரச்சினை!

2 . கேரள-தமிழக முல்லைபெரியாறு ( Mullapperiyar dam) பிரச்சினை!

அல்லது உனக்கும் எனக்குமான ‘கருத்து’ வேறுபட்டு பிரச்சினை!

அட! எது வேண்டுமானாலும் இருக்கட்டுமே!

நான் ஒரு படகில் என் நண்பர்களோடு சென்று கொண்டு இருக்கையில் இன்னொரு படகில் நீங்கள் வந்து மோதி அதனால் சண்டை ஏற்படுகிறது என்று வைத்துக் கொள்வோம்! நான் எனது படகோட்டி மற்றும் எனது நண்பர்களுக்கு ஆதரவாகத் தான் பேசுவேன்! நீங்களும் அது போலத்தான் உங்கள் ‘படகுக்கு’ ஆதரவாகப் பேசுவீர்கள்! இது மனித இயல்பு!

இரண்டு வட்டங்களாக அங்கு நாம் இருவரும் செயல்படுகிறோம்!

இப்படியாக பலப் பல வட்டங்கள் இந்த உலகில் இருந்து கொண்டே தான் இருக்கும்! இன்னும் கேட்டால் எனக்கு ஆதரவான சில வட்டங்களும் உங்களுக்கு ஆதரவான சில வட்டங்களும் இந்தப் பிரச்சினையில் கூப்பிடாமலேயே வந்து சேர்ந்து கொண்டு அவரவர்களுக்கு ஆதரவான கருத்துக்களை வாதங்களை எடுத்து வைப்பார்கள்!அதனால் பிரச்சினைக்கு எப்படி நியாயமான தீர்வு கிடைக்கும்?

மேற்படி இருவரைத் தாண்டிய ஒரு பொது மனிதனை/மனிதர்களைத் தேடி அவன் சொல்லும் தீர்வை இருவரும் மனப்பூர்வமாய் ஒத்துக் கொள்வதாய் இருந்தாலொழிய இந்தப் பிரச்சினையில் ஒரு போதும் தீர்வு ஏற்படாது!

அதற்கென்று இரண்டு வட்டங்களையும் தாண்டிய, ஒரு புத்தருக்கும், ஒரு இராம கிருஷ்ண பரமஹம்சருக்கும் நாம் எங்கே போவது?

சரி!அதுபோன்று, அப்படி உலகில் ஒரு பொது மனிதர் சொல்லும் நியாயத்தையும் யார் இங்கு ஒத்துக் கொள்கிறார்களாம்? ஏதேனும் முன்மாதிரிகள் அதுபோன்று உலகில் உண்டா?

நாடுகளிடையே பூசல், பிரச்சினை என்று வரும்போதும் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் சபையே ஆனாலும், எந்த நாட்டை ஆதரித்தால் தம்மிடம் வந்து பெரிய நாடுகள் சண்டை போடாதோ அந்த நாடுகளை ஆதரிப்பதும், நாதியற்ற நாடுகளை/மக்களை கை கழுவி விடுவதும் நாம் பார்க்காததா என்ன? ஈழப் பிரச்சினையில் அது தானே நடந்தது-நடந்து கொண்டு இருக்கிறது! தமிழர்களின் பூர்விக பூமியிலேயே அவர்கள் அடிமைகளாக்கப் பட்ட அநியாயத்தை எந்த நாடுகள் கண்டித்தனவாம்?”வந்து சேர்ந்தவன் அடிக்கும் போது, இருந்து வாழ்பவன் அதை தடுத்துக் கொள்ளும் எல்லாவித முயற்சிகளும் தவறு”, என்று வாதிடும் புல்லர்கள் இருக்கும் உலகம் தானே இந்த உலகம்?

(சதாம் உசேன் ( Saddam Hussein) செய்த மாபெரும் தவறு என்னவென்று யாருக்காவது தெரியுமா? அமெரிக்காவுக்கு வேறு சில உள்நோக்கங்கள் இருந்தன! ஆனால் அதைச் சொல்லாமல், ஏதோ ரசாயன குண்டுகளை சதாம் மறைத்து வைத்து இருக்கிறார் என்று ஒரு ‘சப்பை’ காரணத்தைச் சொல்லி அமெரிக்கா உள்ளே நுழைந்து குண்டுகள் போட்டு ஈராக்கை அழித்தது. அவரை கைது செய்து ஒப்புக்கு ஒரு விசாரணை நடத்தி தூக்கிலிட்டுக் கொன்றது! பின்னர் அப்படி எந்தக் குண்டுகளும் அங்கு கிடைக்கவில்லை என்று ‘கூலாக’ சொல்லிவிட்டு அடுத்த நாட்டின் மீது ‘தாதா வேலை’ பார்க்கப் போய்விட்டது; ஒரு வருத்தம் கூட எங்கும் தெரிவிக்க வில்லை! அதற்காக, எந்த ஐ.நா. அமேரிக்கா மீது போர் தொடுத்தது அல்லது கண்டனம் தெரிவித்தது ?)

ஆக, இந்த இலட்சணத்தில், பெரும் அறிஞர்கள் அமர்கிற ஐ.நா போன்ற உலக சபைகளிலேயே நியாயம் நீதி எடுபடாத போது, பிற சிற்சிறு அமைப்புகள் மற்றும் தனி மனிதர்கள் இடையில் எப்படி நியாயம் எடுபடப் போகிறது? அது ஒரு வெறும் வீண் கனவே ஆகும்!

“தடி எடுத்தவன் தண்டல்காரன்” என்பது போல, ஆட்களைக் கூட்டி அல்லது நாடுகளைக் கூட்டி தனது சக்தியைப் பெருக்கிக் கொள்பவனைப் பார்த்து இந்த உலகம் அஞ்சும்; ஆதரிக்கும்! மற்றபடி அவனிடம் இருக்கும் உண்மையை யாரும் ஆராய்ந்து ஆதரிப்பதில்லை ; அது மனிதர்கள் எவராலும் நாடுகள்/அமைப்புகள் எவற்றாலும் முடியவும் முடியாது!

உலகம் இப்போதும் எப்போதும் அப்படித்தான்!

இனியும் அப்படியே இருக்கும்!மகாபாரத காலத்திலேயே துவாபர (Dvapara Yuga) யுகத்தில் தர்மம் இரண்டு கால்களில் கூட நிற்கவில்லை என்று எனக்குத் தோன்றுகிறது !! அன்றைக்கே, துரியோதனாதியர் நூறு பேருக்கு பஞ்சபாண்டவர் அஞ்சு பேர் தான்! அதாவது நூறு கெட்டவர்கள்-ஐந்து நல்லவர்கள்!(என்ன விகிதம் இது- சீ!சீ! )இப்போதோ கலி யுகம்!தர்மத்துக்கு ஒரு காலும் இல்லாமலேயே தவழ்ந்து செல்லவேண்டிய துர்பாக்கியம் போலும்!
அது நல்லவர்களை, நியாய தர்மத்தை எப்போது சென்றடையப் போகிறதோ?

எவன் மீதோ – எவள் மீதோ
கொண்ட ஆத்திரத்தை
மலர் மீது கொட்டுகிறாய்!

குப்பை கூடை அல்லவே குழந்தை?

அது…

பிறக்கக் கூடாதவர்களுக்கு பிறந்த
இளம்பிறை –
கிடைக்கக் கூடாதவர்களுக்குக்
கிடைத்த அருங்கொடை!

வழி மாறி வந்து
விழி-நீர் சிந்தும் தேவதை!

கோவில் கருவறை பழியாய் இருந்தென்ன

நோக்கம் சிறந்தென்ன நேர்வழி நடந்தென்ன?
ஆக்கமும் ஊக்கமும் பொருந்தியே யிருந்தென்ன?

தெய்வம் தொழுதென்ன தேய்பிறை கழிந்தென்ன
போய்த்தவம் புரிந்தென்ன அடியாரோ டிருந்தென்ன?

எண்ணம் சரியின்றி என்னதான் நீமுடிப்பாய்?
கண்ணொரு குருவின்றி வண்ணம் உணருவையோ?

தக்கதோர் தகவுதனை அறியாத நாள்வரையும்

குண்டூஸ்: அங்கிள்! உங்க வீட்டு பின் பக்கம் இருக்கிற தோட்டம் ரொம்ப நல்லா இருக்கு. நான் உள்ள வந்து கொஞ்சம் சுத்திப் பாக்கலாமா?

பத்ரி: டேய் குண்டூஸ்! என்ன இளக்காரமா? என் வீட்டுப் பின்னாடி ஒரு ரெண்டடி இடம் இருக்கு. அதுல ஏதோ கொஞ்சம் செடி கொடி வளக்கிறோம். அது போயி உனக்குத் தோட்டமா? கொழுப்புதானே?

குண்டூஸ்: சாரி அங்கிள்! நெஜமாவே அது தோட்டம் மாதிரியே இருக்கு. அதுவும் அந்த பட்டு-ரோஸ்…வந்து….!

பத்ரி: சரி சரி! நீ எங்க வர்றேன்னு எனக்குத் தெரியுது! உனக்கு மறுபடியும் ஒரு பட்டு-ரோஸ் செடி வேணும்..அதக் கொண்டுபோய் உங்க வீட்டுத் தொட்டியிலே நட்டுவச்சிட்டு நாலு நாலு கழிச்சி காய்ஞ்சி போச்சின்னுட்டு திரும்ப வந்து…உங்க தோட்டம் நல்லா இருக்குன்னு எனக்கு ஐஸ் வைப்பே! உன்னப் பத்தி எனக்குத் தெரியாதா?

குண்டூஸ்: அப்படி இல்லை அங்கிள்… நானும் என்னென்னமோ பண்ணி பாக்கிறேன்…எனக்கு மட்டும் வளர மாட்டேங்குது அங்கிள்! செம்மண்ணு, உரம், காத்து, தண்ணி, சூரிய வெளிச்சம் இப்படி எல்லாமே கவனமா பாத்தும் ஏன் வளர மாட்டேங்குதுன்னு தெரியல்ல. நான் நினைக்கிறேன்…தொட்டியில வளராதுன்னு…உங்கள மாதிரி பூமியில வளர வைக்கவும் இடம் இல்லியே..?

பத்ரி: அடேய்…குரங்கு குண்டூஸ்! ஏதோ நட்டோமா…அதுக்கு எல்லாம் தந்தோமா பாதுகாப்பு பன்னோமான்னுட்டு இல்லாம நீதான் அது பக்கத்துலேயே இருவத்து நாலு மணி நேரமும் நின்னுகிட்டு “வேவு” பாத்தபடியே இருக்கியே…அப்புறம் எப்படி செடி வளந்து பூ பூக்கும்? அதுல வேற ஒரு நாள் நீ பொறுமை இல்லாம செடி வேர் பிடிச்சி இருக்கான்னு மண்ணை தோண்டி பாத்தியாமே! எனக்கு தகவல் வந்துது. போடா முட்டாள்!

குண்டூஸ்: திட்டாதீங்க மாமா! நீங்கதானே எனக்கு மானசீக குரு…உங்க கிட்டத்தானே அத எல்லாமே கத்துக்கிட்டேன்!

பத்ரி: டேய் என்ன உளர்ற?

குண்டூஸ்: ஆமா மாமா! உங்க ரெண்டு குழந்தைகளையும் நீங்க அப்படித்தானே ரோபோட் மாதிரி வளக்கறீங்க! நின்னா அட்வைஸ் உட்காந்தா அட்வைஸ் விளையாடினா அட்வைஸ் படிச்சா அட்வைஸ்..ஸ்க்கூல்ல அட்வைஸ், கடைல அட்வைஸ், யார்னா விருந்தாளிங்க வந்தா அவங்க எதிர்ல அட்வைஸ் இப்படி இருவத்து நாலு மணிநேர அட்வைஸ்-மழை பொழியிறீங்க..!

பத்ரி: அதுல என்னடா தப்பு! உங்கப்பா மாதிரி இருக்கச் சொல்றியா…?

குண்டூஸ்: அட்வைஸ் பண்ணுங்க மாமா…அது தப்பு இல்ல! ஆனா அட்வைஸ் மட்டுமே பண்ணிக்கிட்டு இருக்கீங்க பாருங்க…அது தான் தப்பு! சாப்பாட்டுல உப்பு வேண்டாம்ன்னு யாரு சொன்னாங்க…உப்பையே சாப்பாடுன்னு ஆக்கிடாதீங்கன்னு தானே நாங்க கேக்கிறோம்! அட்வைஸ் உப்பு மாதிரி அளவா இருக்கட்டும்! பாருங்க… என் கூட அவன் விளையாடியே ரெண்டு மாசம் ஆச்சி. அப்பிடியும் ஒன்னும் பிரமாதமா மார்க்கு எடுக்கறது இல்லியே மாமா!

பத்ரி: என்னடா கிண்டலா? முகரைய பேத்துப்புடுவேன்!

குண்டூஸ்: கோவிச்சிக்காதீங்க மாமா! என்னைய போயி பட்டு-ரோஸாவ வேவு பாக்குற குரங்குன்னு

சொன்னீங்க இல்ல…நீங்களும் அதைத்தானே பண்ணிக்கிட்டு இருக்கீங்கன்னு சொல்ல வந்தேன்…உங்களுக்கு அதுக்குள்ள கோவம் வருது!

பத்ரி: நீ போயி உன் வேலையைப் பாரு! பெருசா பெரிய பேச்செல்லாம் பேச வந்துட்டான்…குரங்கு! அது வேற….இது வேற!

குண்டூஸ்: என்ன அது வேற…இது வேற? அதுதான் இது…இதுதான் அது மாமா!

சின்ன சின்ன விஷயங்களுக்கு எல்லாம் நீங்களும் அக்காவும், பாவம் அந்த சுமா-தேஜாவுக்கு டன்-டன்னா அட்வைஸ் பண்ணறீங்க! அப்புறம் நீங்க அட்வைஸ் பண்ணிட்டு சும்மாவா இருப்பீங்க? ரெண்டு பேருமா சேந்துகிட்டு நீங்க சொன்ன மாதிரி, எச்சில் பண்ணாம அவங்க தண்ணி குடிக்கிறாங்களா, தினமும் அஞ்சேகால் மணிக்கு டான்னு படிக்க உட்கார்றாங்களா, வீட்டுக்கு வந்த விருந்தாளிக்கு ‘அபி-வந்தனம்’ பண்றாங்களா, சோப்பு போட்டு கை கழுவுறாங்களா, எடுத்த இடத்துல பொருள வைக்கிறாங்களான்னுட்டு “வேவு” பாக்கிறது இல்லியா? அதனாலேயே ரெண்டு குழந்தைகளுக்கும் ஒரு குற்ற உணர்ச்சியை நீங்க அவங்க மனசுக்குள்ள வெதைக்கறது இல்லியா?

பத்ரி: எனக்குத் தெரிஞ்சதை நான் சொல்லிக் குடுத்தா அது தப்பா? போடா லூசு..!

குண்டூஸ்: அப்புறம் அவங்க எப்போத்தான் சுயமா கத்துக்குவாங்க? உங்களுக்குத் தெரிஞ்ச யானையைப் பத்தியே நீங்க வள வளன்னு பேசிகிட்டு இருந்தா…நிஜமான யானையை அவங்க எப்போ கண்ணுல பாத்து தெரிஞ்சிக்குவாங்க?

‘ஒரு மரத்தோட பழம் மண்ணுல விழுது. அத்தோட மரத்தோட வேலை முடிஞ்சி போச்சி. மண்ணுல விழுந்த பழத்துக்கு தானே ஊடுருவி வேர் பிடித்து செடியா மாறத் தெரியும்’! காட்டுல இருக்கிற எல்லா மரத்துக்கும் யாரும் ‘வேர்-பாய’ கத்துக் கொடுக்கல மாமா! அதுவே தண்ணி இருக்கிற இடத்தை தானே கண்டு பிடிச்சி போய்கிட்டே இருக்கு. அதோட கிளைகள் இப்போ மண்ணுக்கு மேல ஆகாயம் தொடுது! அதோட சல்லி வேர்கள் கிட்ட யாரும் போயி படுத்துகிட்டு இப்பிடி போ-அப்பிடி போன்னு ‘டைரக்சன்’ பண்ண தேவையே இல்லியே!

பத்ரி: அப்போ…என் அனுபவம் பத்தி நான் என் கொழந்தைகளுக்குச் சொல்லக் கூடாதா? போடா போ…!

குண்டூஸ்: அப்படி என்ன ஆகாய அனுபவம் உங்களுக்கு வந்து விட்டதாம்..? ஒரு இருபது நிமிஷம் முன்னாடி போன ரயில்ல என் ப்ரெண்டு ஒருத்தன் டெல்லி போனான்…நான் பின்னாடியே வேற ஒரு ரயில்ல அங்கே போய் சேந்துட்டேன்!

அதனாலேயே என் ப்ரெண்டு என்னமோ டெல்லி பாதுஷா ஆயிடுவான்; நான் மட்டும் பாழாய்ப் போயிடுவேனா மாமா?

பல கோடி வருஷ DNA கதைகள் உங்க குழந்தைங்க உடம்புல இருக்கு. அதுல உங்க இருபது வருஷக் கதைய மட்டும் அனுபவம்ன்னு பெருசா பேசி என்ன லாபம்? உங்களுக்கு ஏற்பட்ட அனுபவத்தை வெறும் வார்த்தையால தர முயற்சி பண்ணி என்ன புண்ணியம்-அன்பையே தராமல்..?
வெறும் Ego தான் அது மாமா! வேற ஒரு மண்ணும் இல்ல!

பத்ரி: அப்போ…நான் ஈகோ புடிச்சவனா..? அட..ராஸ்கல்…உன்னை இன்னிக்கி உதைக்காம விடமாட்டேன்!

7 Tips for Young Parents!

Being a Psychologist for more than two decades I found some strange truths that affect the ‘Children-Parents‘ relationship. Be it positive or it negative the main cause for the attitude of any children is mostly affected by parents. You will never believe that out of 100 children at least a 90, are affected psychologically by the parents only!!

I observed the bitter truth in thousands of cases. For example, if a child is not efficient at mathematics you can doubt that it should be caused by one of his/her parent. Might be in her/his tender age the parent must have behaved roughly for teaching the maths. ( In 5% cases affected by teachers, the rest 5% by others) Result would be, the child will hate maths, as well as the parent in due course in a subtle way. When the harshness comes from the parent for first time, a child usually shatters to great extent. His/her hopes and expectations are suddenly collapsing and seems all the securities are being withdrawn for some ‘conditional-clause’ from his/her beloveds.

Be it any thing, manners, etiquette, teachings, bargains for material things to demand a child for a bit more challenging tasks/academic marks, are forcing a child to push in solitude and in a kind of darkness. Evaluating the pleasure and pain, if the pain of a particular child is more in comparison with that of pleasure he/she accumulates from the life, the ratio of trauma in the child is increased in same proportion.

That’s why we see different types of children, with various traits, characters and behaviors, though born/brought up in the same house/conditions. Any single or simple incident may affect a child (negatively or positively) or may not affect at all. In my experience, I do not know how/when/why a single/simple incident affects so much a child and why it leaves a lasting impression in his/her sub-conscious mind and grow her/him inferior or slower than other children.

Some times, when they grow older they will have to vent out their pressure stored up in them, so they become more violent, revengeful, angrier and show their negative emotions in every subtle/direct ways upon the society, more particularly on their parent. In my opinion the violence imposed upon children throughout the world is simply unimaginable than on any particular sect or community. Because, children have no representation for their own as with any other segments in the globe.

The good news is, we can remove out those revengeful feelings or pain from their inner sub-conscious mind completely !!

Yet, prevention is better than cure.

Yes! As a good father of four children and an inner-mind Yozen Therapist I should tell you here a few important things to young parents.

1. Never be too smart to boast yourself with your child. Don’t ever get pride to say, “I was a Champion, I was a Gold medalist” that and this to demolish his/her urge to fly high.

2. Don’t be a teacher to teach-on forever. Be just a mother or father and give him/her some space and time to grow by himself. Plants grow without anyone’s hindrance in the forests. Gardeners never talk incessantly with the plants and trees but simply look after their needs. That’s it.

3. Cut off your incessant talking/advising to your children. Advise should be like a salt in the food and the salt can never be a food!!

4. Show your love “in action”. Not in mere lifeless words or buying for him tons of electronic gadgets and comforts.

5. Just encourage him/her, assist him, support to grow well. Tell him your experiences good or bad in a normal sense and in a normal time in a casual way. Never keep any intention in it!!

6. Love him/her unconditionally. Which means never put conditions for his legitimate requests, equating for his/her good academic marks, nor demanding for any comparative demands. It is childish to bargain with your child as you do in a market place.

7. Only your Love and affection will raise him/her to a significant height, not your incessant advises ever!

‘அண்டம் படைத்த அன்பனே-அய்யா!

“நரை-திரை-பிணி-மூப்பு-சாக்காடு

இவையெலாம் என்னை

அண்டமுடியாமல் செய்திடுவாயா?

என் மழலைநாட்களின் மகிழ்ச்சி யாவையும்

இப்படி கேட்டதும் அதிர்ந்த இறைவன்

இளித்தவாறே இறைஞ்சலானான்!

“இழிவு படுத்தாதே; எதையாவது கேளேன்!

ஒரு பொருளோ பதவியோ உயரிய பரிசோ

ஏதோ ஒன்று கேட்டால் மகிழ்வேன்;

கேட்டுதான் தொலையேன்!

“ஒன்றுமே வேண்டாம் இறைவா!

உன்னைக் கண்ட மகிழ்ச்சியே

இன்றைக்குப் போதுமே!

உன்னைக் காணாத போதும்

அப்படியே இருந்தேன்!

இன்பதுன்பமாம் இருமைகள் தம்மை

நீநினைத்தாலும் நிறுத்த முடியாதென

எனக்குத் தான் தெரியுமே!

வெற்று இன்பம் திகட்டும் தினத்-தேன்!

துன்பம்-பனிமலை உருகிக் கரையும்!

ஆசைக் குரங்கு பற்றும் பலகிளை

வேசை மனத்தால் ஆசை நிற்குமா?

இரவு பகலென வரட்டும் இரண்டுமே!

A father’s love contributes as much and sometimes more to a child’s development as does a mother’s love. That is one of many findings in a new large-scale analysis of research about the “power of parental rejection and acceptance in shaping our personalities as children and into adulthood”.
__________________________________”In our half-century of international research, we’ve not found any other class of experience that has as strong and consistent effect on personality and personality development as does the experience of rejection, especially by parents in childhood,” says Ronald Rohner of the University of Connecticut, co-author of the new study in Personality and Social Psychology Review.“Children and adults everywhere — regardless of differences in race, culture, and gender — tend to respond in exactly the same way when they perceived themselves to be rejected by their parents, caregivers and other attachment figures.”
Looking at 36 studies from around the world that together involved more than 10,000 participants, Rohner and co-author Abdul Khaleque found that in response to rejection by their parents, children tend to feel more anxious and insecure, as well as more hostile and aggressive toward others.The pain of rejection — especially when it occurs over a period of time in childhood — tends to linger into adulthood, making it more difficult for adults who were rejected as children to form secure and trusting relationships with their intimate partners. The studies are based on surveys of children and adults about their parents’ degree of acceptance or rejection during their childhood, coupled with questions about their personality dispositions.Moreover, Rohner says, emerging evidence from the past decade of research in psychology and neuroscience is revealing that the same parts of the brain are activated when people feel rejected as are activated when they experience physical pain. “Unlike physical pain, however, people can psychologically re-live the emotional pain of rejection over and over for years,” Rohner says.When it comes to the impact of a father’s love versus that of a mother, results from more than 500 studies suggest that while children and adults often experience more or less the same level of acceptance or rejection from each parent, the influence of one parent’s rejection — oftentimes the father’s — can be much greater than the other’s. A 13-nation team of psychologists working on the International Father Acceptance Rejection Project has developed at least one explanation for this difference: that children and young adults are likely to pay more attention to whichever parent they perceive to have higher interpersonal power or prestige. So if a child perceives her father as having higher prestige, he may be more influential in her life than the child’s mother. Work is ongoing to better understand this potential relationship.

One important take-home message from all this research, Rohner says, is that fatherly love is critical to a person’s development. The importance of a father’s love should help motivate many men to become more involved in nurturing child care. Additionally, he says, widespread recognition of the influence of fathers on their children’s personality development should help reduce the incidence of “mother blaming” common in schools and clinical setting. “The great emphasis on mothers and mothering in America has led to an inappropriate tendency to blame mothers for children’s behavior problems and maladjustment when, in fact, fathers are often more implicated than mothers in the development of problems with these children”.

This is the message from a study by the University of Iowa, which found that infants who have a close, intimate relationship with a parent are less likely to be troubled, aggressive or experience other emotional and behavioral problems when they reach their school age.

Surprisingly, the researchers found that a young child needs to feel particularly secure with only one parent to reap the benefits of stable emotions and behavior, and that being attached to dad is just as helpful as being close to mom.

The study bolsters the still-debated role of the influence that a parent can exercise at the earliest stages in a child’s mental and emotional development, the authors contend in the paper, published in the journal Child Development.

“There is a really important period when a mother or a father should form a secure relationship with their child, and that is during the first two years of life. That period appears to be critical to the child’s social and emotional development,” says Sanghag Kim, a post-doctoral researcher in psychology at the UI who collaborated with UI psychology professor Grazyna Kochanska on the study. “At least one parent should make that investment.”

The researchers assessed the relationship of 102 infants (15 months old) with a parent and then followed up with 86 of them when they reached age 8. Separate surveys of the parents and the child were taken at that time. The infants and parents were drawn from a broad spectrum of income, education, and race. All the couples were heterosexual.

The authors also solicited feedback from teachers about the children, which ranged from concerns about inner emotions, such as worry or sadness, to more outward displays, such as disobedience and aggression. Interestingly, the children’s reports and their teachers’ impressions were similar; yet they differed, sometimes greatly, from the parents’ evaluations.
“Parents and teachers have different perspectives,” Kim explains. “They observe children in different contexts and circumstances. That is why we collected data from many informants who know the child.”

The researchers were surprised to find out that infants who had felt attached to both parents did not enjoy additional mental and emotional advantages into childhood, compared to those who had been close to one parent. The UI psychologists’ best explanation is that a warm, secure, and positive bond with at least one primary caregiver may be enough to meet the child’s need for security and to provide a solid foundation for development.

Other studies have contended that being secure with both parents can have additional advantages; this study, however, checked in with the children when they were older and their outcomes could be more fully measured than those surveyed in previous work, the Iowa researchers said.

The study appears to be good news for single mothers and stay-at-home dads, two marked parenting shifts that are defining this generation. Kim says the study shows that either parent can serve as a secure, attachment figure for the infant, thus providing the closeness and support to promote the child’s healthy emotional growth.

“Some people think the father is not good enough to be the primary caregiver,” says Kim, who earned his doctorate in sociology at the UI last year. “Our data show otherwise.”

The study did not directly sample single mothers, as all families included two parents. Still, the finding that one parent can provide the tight bond and emotional dividends as two parents “is a good sign,” Kim says, that should be studied further.

On the other end, the study showed that infants who had not felt secure with either parent were more likely to report worries, fears, and aggression when they reached their school age.
